The Not-So-Colorful Color Run

We had good intentions. Promise.

The Color Run came to Birmingham on Labor Day. We made a team. We signed up. All was well.

We expected the day to turn out like this:

It kind of looked like this (minus the dementors):

We met at 6:30am to drive out to the track. The weather was looking rather nasty, but we went ahead.

After an hour of standing in the pouring rain, we decided to call it quits. We were soaking wet, cold, and not at all well trained to run 5 kilometers in the rain. I mean, we were planning on jogging/walking it anyway.

Hey, we got our t-shirts and color packets. Maybe we'll have better luck in Atlanta in March?

Best hat there. I'm sorry we had to leave it in the parking lot.

the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day

Today was one of the most humiliating days of my life.

I'll recount it in the most extreme detail possible for the full effect.

This morning I walked to class with Hillary, as usual. The weather was kind of miserable, but other than that everything was fine. I sit down in my Human Behaviors class and wait for it to start. About 15 minutes into lecture I started feeling really anxious. I couldn't get comfortable, so I kept moving around, trying to stretch my legs and such. Then I get ridiculously warm. So I shed my rain jacket. Still not better. At this point I realize I feel really bad and am starting to get a little lightheaded. I decide to get up and leave to get some water and sit down. Hindsight: standing up was THE WORST decision I could have made. I take about two steps and then completely black out. I hit the ground and then wake up with 20 terrified classmates staring at me, my professor is calling 911, someone running to get me some water, and some other person is making sure I'm responsive. Awkward. I hardly know these people. Luckily, this was a social work class (so most people are pretty compassionate) and I had this professor before.

Long story short, a policeman, three firemen, and two paramedics arrive at the classroom to check me out. I moved out into the hallway, and after checking my blood pressure, blood sugar, and other vital signs, I'm given the choice of going to the hospital. HECK NO. I do NOT want to be wheeled out on the gurney they brought up for me. I told them I would go to the med clinic for further tests. As if this is not embarrassing enough, the policeman tells me to get in the car for him to drive me back to the dorm. So I ride in the back of the marked police car from Haley Center back to the dorm. Thankfully, Kaitlynn was in the room when I got back and immediately jumped in the car to drive me to the med clinic.

I arrive at the med clinic and literally had the shortest waiting time ever. (Note to self: passing out puts you at the top of their priority list.) After going through exactly what happened in excruciatingly personal detail several times, I am informed they are going to run plenty of tests on me to make sure everything is okay. They wheel the EKG cart into my room and after I strip down, they hook me up and check out my heart. Turns out it was doing its job just like it was supposed to. I walk down to the lab to give blood (second time that day) and start crying in the middle of it. The nurse couldn't find my vein in one arm, so she had to switch to the other one, and I finally just broke down about what a terrible day it had been. I'm not anemic, I don't have mono, and my white blood cell count was perfectly normal. I was poked, prodded, and everything else they could have done. Basically, nothing is wrong with me and there is no apparent reason for my fainting spell. The doctor excused me from class for two days and prescribed plenty of rest and fluids.

I guess the whole situation is kind of humorous now, but it was extremely embarrassing at the time. It was humbling for sure and made me appreciate even more my sweet friends who dropped everything they were doing to take care of me.

100th Post

So, I just realized this is my 100th blog post.

I wanted to do something really clever, witty, or extremely memorable.

But I've got nothing.

Now it's just really uncomfortable.

Sorry I'm so awkward.

But thanks for reading even when I post weird and dumb things.

just add a tub of butter, y'all

To apologize to the boys for stealing their car doors, we decided to bake cupcakes as a peace offering. First of all, Melanie used her legit yellow hand mixer. Whoa, dream big. We decided to go all out and make the icing from scratch, so naturally we turned to Paula Deen for a recipe.

So we found this. Well, it originally tasted FOUL. As in MAJOR PARTY FOUL. We just kept adding in vanilla hoping for the best. In the midst of my anger, I tweeted at Paula Deen that I was disappointed in her recipe.

Oh, what a major party foul it was on me.

Turns out, spreading the icing on the cupcakes was the most delicious thing EVER.

So I had to tweet at Paula AGAIN apologizing for my mistake.

The moral of the story: tweet others just as you would like to be tweeted.

pondering...

Not that I'm very math-minded, but I bet if we were to graph all of the fire alarms in Auburn dorms, the all-girls dorms would have more than any other buildings on campus.

breaking up is hard to do

Dear Yogurt Mountain,

We need to talk. I think we need a break. It's just not working out for me. I never agreed this would be mutually exclusive, and I'm just not ready for a commitment. I mean, let's face it, you're kind of a slut. You never have an open parking spot, and some hussy is always cutting me off in the toppings line. It's a hassle to drive on 280 during rush hour, fight of Sienna minivans for a parking spot, and then have to wait in line to spend time together. I don't think you understand my needs and we just don't have anything in common anymore. So I've moved on. I met the greatest new frozen yogurt boutique. His location is fantastic, perfect for an afterwork treat. He's kind of like the "Lars from Norway" of frozen yogurt franchises. Plus, he's so giving, and supporting him means supporting a small business in my community. Mr. Yogurt Lab is a dreamboat waiting to carry me off to far and exotic places via tastebuds. I hope you find someone who makes you just as happy. I just want you to know, it's not you; it's me. But I still think we should be friends. And, hey, there are always plenty of other fish in the sea.

Best Regards,
KMS

Rule, Britannia!

Yesterday, the mascots for the London 2012 Olympics were revealed. You think the land that produced Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, The Beatles, Harry Potter, Hugh Grant, William Shakespeare, and THE Queen are proud?

it's all greek to me

Tonight for Thursday Supper Club, we decided to have Greek night. I LOVE Greek food and everything about Greece in general. It is one of my life goals to spend time in that country. Anyway, I was super pumped about cooking a Greek-ish meal. Too bad it was an EPIC FAIL. So bad, I can't even post a picture of it. The pasta didn't have enough olive oil, the salad was just funky, and the only decent part was the pita chips that were half-burnt, half-chewy. I think I'll let the REAL greeks create the most perfect meals, and I'll just stick to being a very appreciative, well-fed customer.
